Before you begin

For this game it is best to divide the class into two groups of four kids in each group. The children sit facing each other in pairs. Place one gumbo pot in front of each pair of children. Place the food cards between the pots with the rhythms facing up.

To play

One child from each pair draws a card and counts the number of beats on the card. The other child of the pair must agree with the count. When both pairs of children have agreed on the number of beats on their cards, the children then decide if they want to put the card into their gumbo pot or into the pot of the other pair of children. The children make the decision whether or not to keep the card based on the food item on the back–if it is something they want to “eat” they can keep it, if it is yucky and something they do not want to “eat” they can force the other pair of kids to “cook” it in their gumbo pot.
